Runners Guide to the Galaxy and Everything Inbetween Part I

This weekend I ran a total of 15 miles. At first I was not enthusiastic about it as I asked myself what is the purpose of running these long distances during this time. There are no races scheduled and it's been a while since I have run with other people. By the end, I realize that it's just a good way to get out of the house, destress from what's going on in the world, and an opportunity to listen to my music.

I also got to run in some new running shorts I bought from Rabbit. It made it easier for me to carry my keys and it felt comfortable running in them. I have been running for several years now but I have never really thought about some of the gear or apps I like to use during my run.

For those that are new to running or have been running a while here are some apps and gear that I use:

Apps

  • Strava keeps track of my miles, time, and elevation. It's been a good way to see my own progress from day to day and see how much I have run overtime. It's also a fun way to stay connected to friends and see their progress. I know Nike also has their own app that keeps track of miles too!
  • Spotify keeps me motivated during my long runs. Sometimes I need some good tunes to get me through the longest of runs. I have created several playlist that are for half marathons and marathons. A lot of the music comes from friend recommendations.
  • Instagram for those post workout selfies or anything that catches my eye on my run. Sometimes it's nice to take a break.
  • Fleet Feet App to log in those miles and earn cool rewards. They also have articles related to running, events happening nearby, and gear.  Other running stores may have similar programs.

Gear

  • Hat for those hot days or when it's slightly sprinkling.
  • Garmin Watch/Fit Bit for when Strava fails to record, I use Garmin to keep track of time and mileage.
  • Snacks because I can only run for so long before I get tired. I usually use GU to replenish energy.
  • AfterShokz Headphones because I love listening to music during my run. Best part is they are wireless and allow me to still hear what's going on around me since they are bone induction headphones.
  • Nathan Armband is the easiest way to carry my phone around me without it moving around in my pocket.
  • Shoes are a no brainer. It's the right shoe that will keep me going though. I have been using Brooks Ghost and just recently started running in Nike Pegasus.
While I have been running for a few years I am still learning about cool ways to keep me motivated in running whether it's through apps, gear, podcasts, books, and cross training. If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them. It's been a process.
