Indie Music Week

This week I spent some time visiting a few bars in the Jackson area due to indie music week. It was my first time out and I enjoyed what I heard. I was surprised I haven't been out much to check out the music scene and almost wish I would catch more live music during my time here.

I remember the first time I listened to the local music scene in my own hometown of El Paso. My friend had invited me to a venue called Zepplins (Lowbrow) to see a band called The Lusitania. Up until that point, I always thought that the music scene in El Paso was mariachi musicians and emo artist who were riding the wave of what was happening on the radio at the time.

The Lusitania played some pretty sick tunes though. Their sound was a bit Americana and Southern Rock. It was not quiet something I have ever heard on the radio. They were one of the first band that opened me up to a whole music scene I would grow to love. I caught artist like Emily Davis, and the Royalty. And of course I can't leave out the hometown hero in Jim Ward who has played for Sparta, At the Drive in, and Sleeper Car.

Nowhere was indie music most impressive than when I explored the Austin music scene. If there is ever a place to immerse yourself in music it is definitely Austin. Even if you don't find yourself with a whole lot of money, you could explore the downtown area and catch some tunes outside of the bar. I remember falling in love with artist like Alejandro Escovedo, Thao Nguyen, and Quiet Company. There were also artist that traveled far to have their voice heard. I remember catching artist like Old 97's and Girl in a Coma who were nice folk. There is something to be said about going to a small music venue and having a rocking good time. Those times will always hold a special place in my heart every time a song pops up.

What are some of your favorite indie artist? Do you have any hometown artist that you recommend?
